Samuel Dougal is a Cornish designer, bespoke tailor and – we and many others think – the next big thing to happen to the fashion world. The 26-year-old has been working on his own couture line for nearly two years, designing for numerous private and celebrity clients, and will be showcasing his first ready-to-wear collection at LFW this week. We caught up with Dougal to find out what he thinks about this season and what we can expect from his new range.
After graduating with a Bespoke Tailoring degree from London College of Fashion, Dougal began working for well-known designers such as Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy.
Having worked with some of the best in the business, Dougal honed his skills in couture, millinery and knitwear and has applied them to his craft. With ex-Dragons’ Den star Kelly Hoppen as a mentor and investor in his business, the young designer has gone from strength to strength, focussing on producing a collection that is both wearable and high-end, but most of all, unique.
Speaking to Mi Magazine, Dougal explains that his inspiration is simple: home. ‘Cornwall has this timelessness’ he says, ‘that I’ve been trying to get across in my clothes’. Choosing to underpin his collection with a sense of rural England and tradition anglo craftmanship, the clothes are made from British fabrics from all over the isles.
Dougal’s designs are created around the woman. The silhouettes are clean and simple, designed to have maximum impact with minimal and clever tailoring.
In an interview with The Guardian, he said: “As a young entrepreneur, I’ve found it’s not knowing everything about business, but rather being fearless and completely passionate. Make sure you believe in yourself and your idea. Then once you’ve begun ensure you build the best team to support you.”
